Introduction to Astronomy

During this session, you will learn everything you need to observe a starry sky with the naked eye or with a telescope.

The initiation session includes two parts: a theoretical part in our Sport Nature Lozère shop in Florac and a practical part on the Causse Méjean in the heart of the starry reserve (RICE). We will teach you all the basic notions necessary for stargazing, ideal for starting out in astronomy.

Things to take:

– hiking shoes or basketball
– warm clothing + down jacket
– bottle of water

Procedure and duration of the activity:

We meet at 10 p.m. at the Sport Nature Lozère store in Florac where a theoretical presentation of astronomy will take place. You will learn about astronomical coordinates, sky movements, stars, constellations and different types of telescopes and lenses.

Stargazing on the Causse Méjean:

Around 10:30 p.m., we will leave for the Causse Méjean, near Florac. Once inside the reserve we have several easily accessible sites.

We invite you to participate in the installation of equipment and telescopes and we will see how to locate the stars in the sky.

Afterwards, we will proceed to a guided observation of the sky to learn to recognize the main stars and constellations.

The first planets we will observe are Jupiter and Saturn, but we will also observe all kinds of clusters, nebulae and galaxies. We will teach you how to handle the different equipment, you can test the different settings for optimal observation.
